We find that there is often a bit of confusion about redesigning a website. If you are not sure whether a redesign is right for you the first step is to assess whether redesigning can help your website. Redesigning a website means we take the best content in your existing site and use it to generate a new website. If you need to update the look of your existing website, it's functionality, or to move into modern web design with a responsive website that will look great on a huge number of devices, then redesigning is a great choice. Generally a redesign is significantly less expensive than a new website. Most of the content used will be the same content but it will be packaged in different ways such as new picture sizes that capture a better feel for the design or edited articles or other content. If you have great content to repackage then a redesign might be right for you. If not then you may need a completely new website.
The general idea with a redesign is that we don't alter what is great about your website; we just capture it and use it to create an even better and more focused website that is much easier to use and looks great. To ensure success however, be sure to add some new content to your redesign package. Most redesigns do require a little new content at minimum. Great images are key to a successful design so if you do not have great imagery in the original design then you might want to add some images to your package. If your original copy for the site is outdated then you might want to have that rewritten. Also an updated picture of yourself, your offices, or a new logo will often help to bring new life to the design and make it even more successful.
Communication is the key to any great design. When starting a redesign the first thing you should do is read over all the content of your site, look at the images, and get familiar with all of it so that you can assess what works and what doesn't. As you do so take detailed notes on anything that you would like to change or that needs a designer's attention. As you carefully assess the design be sure to point out any information that is outdated or not relevant and be sure to provide updated information to replace it when applicable. If you audit your content and find that you are happy with most of the content then you can move on to the next stage of the redesign. If you find that you are replacing over half of the content then you might want to consider a completely new website.
A great web designer who really understands the process of redesigning a site can help you take the best of your website and create a new format that will transform your web presence and take your business to the next level. Choose your designer carefully however because there are some dangers involved that many designers may not consider. For example, you will want to make sure to choose a designer that knows how to preserve not only your current web traffic but your search engine ranking, inbound links, URL addresses, and many other concerns that can be affected by a careless redesign. (For more information see our article on the Hidden Dangers of SEO.) Proper analytics are key to a redesign of any type so if you don't have comprehensive analytics installed on your site then you should do so before the redesign is started to protect current traffic and SEO.
