How HTML5 & Responsive Design will change 2014 & Beyond

Whether you are a fan of HTML5, an app developer, a programmer on the fence about retraining your skills, or you are a follower of the HTML5 vs. apps debate today is a HISTORIC DAY! If this was a war then the war is over; today is the day HTML5 officially BEAT APPS.

If you have never heard of responsive designs and want an overview check this out; read about responsive designs. For those of you that are familiar with responsive designs and are just not sure whether they are right for you please read on. Actually the credit goes to my resourceful friends at Firefox who have bucked “common logic” once again in the purest tradition of the Internet to come up with a truly amazing add-on for Firefox. Without getting too technical, the Odinmonkey add-on, released for Firefox 22 in June of 2013, allows web based platforms like HTML5 to use C or C+ to create a “hyper-javascript” to power their platform. By making this optimization model run at least ten times faster than traditional Javascripting they are opening up a whole world of new browser based programs and games that before were just not possible.

This release by Firefox will pressure other browser manufacturers to add similar features or lose the war for the fastest browser and become outdated which, as we know, they will not do. I predict this will be a standard for all browsers in 6 months or less. (Update: Chrome is already on-board) Odinmonkey was the final shot across the bow that will bring this long war to a close for 90% of cases and in 5 years it will relegate apps development to the “special closet” of web development. I know that this is hard for some app developers to hear but this will paint a clearer path forward for all developers, all of which is good for the consumers of Internet content as well as the people who make it. After all, who is going to opt for apps with complicated deployment issues that will interrupt the user with updates and other problems over a continuous silent deployment, constant iteration, and robust control that can be gained using HTML5?

Yes, it will be a slow process because the technology is in it's infancy but the Genie will not be put back into the bottle. For the five three years there will be the occasional need for apps for websites for example. They will always be needed for feature heavy programs such as graphics intensive games that need a little more speed. Yes, we may need them as a stop-gap measure while we are waiting for things to catch up but as of today apps will begin a slow decent into extinction.

HTML5 Won the War vs Apps 04

This is a great victory for the open web because it means any developer with the desire and knowledge can make a great game, program, or web experience without paying anyone 30% for the privilege. Most businesses dream of a 30% profit margin so opening a company that is already forced to make 30% more to show a profit has kept many great products from the market. This leveling of the playing field will allow many “lean start-ups” to use the web as a place to experiment and iterate on games and programs in almost real time. This new hyper-fast web platform will bring back many great programmers which will mean more content and more diversity and a purer web economy that does not have to fit someone’s corporate agenda or be mainstream to thrive. So when anyone asks about the war between apps and HTML5 tell them it’s over. The King is dead. Long live the King.

Responsive Design Devices 06

The World of Computer Browsing is Quickly Dying: The smart device revolution is upon us. People are now browsing on phones and tablets more often than they are on computers. Not only are they browsing but they are researching large purchases and buying a ton of goods and services online. In 2013 people spent over $210 billion dollars on eCommerce and a large and growing portion of those purchases were made on tablets and phones. Research shows that 90% of online purchases are done across multiple devices. If your design is not responsive you are a dinosaur waiting for extinction. Don't let your competitors get ahead of you. Evolve your online strategy with a responsive design and take advantage of an entire new world of customers and readers. GETTING STARTED WITH A RESPONSIVE DESIGN
